Research Graduate School for the Humanities PhD programme Admission

Admission

The Graduate School for the Humanities offers training for PhD students. Here you can find everything related to admission and doing a PhD at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Groningen.

Internal and external candidates

A distinction is made between internal and external candidates. If you applied for a PhD position advertised by the university, you are an internal candidate. The finances are provided by the university in the form of a PhD scholarship, or by a grant acquired by the university from the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research NWO, or the European Science Foundation ESF, etc.

If you approach the university, either bringing your own money or after acquiring funding (e.g. through an international grant program), you are an external candidate. To be admitted as an external candidate, you need a) a supervisor, b) a project proposal, and c) a financial statement. A committee consisting of representatives of the GSH and the relevant research institute will then decide on your admission.
