Department of Genetics

About us

The Department of Genetics is part of the University Medical Centre Groningen (UMCG). It has a large, international staff and a broad spectrum of activities:

  • research lines in systems genetics, autoimmune and intestinal disorders, neurodegenerative diseases, congenital syndromes, heart diseases, oncogenetics
  • hosts the Genomics Coordination Centre (offering systems genetics facilities) and the Genome Analysis Facility for large-scale genomic studies
  • clinical genetics, diagnostics and genetic counselling*
  • European surveillance of congenital anomalies (Eurocat)
  • teaching of BSc, MD and MSc students, and training of clinical fellows

* There is a separate UMCG website (in Dutch) with information for patients and medical professionals

  • Lude Franke awarded UMCG research prize of €100,000 (January)
  • Visit by Frances Collins, Director of NIH, to the department (March)
  • Iris Jonkers awarded Rosalind Franklin Fellowship, a prestigious 5-year grant for women at an early stage of their academic careers with a proven record of excellence (May)
  • Cisca Wijmenga awarded an NWO Spinoza prize of €2.5m (the top Dutch prize in science) (June)
  • Successful first-ever ISO 9001 audit of research section (November)
