Department of Genetics

About us

The Department of Genetics is part of the University Medical Centre Groningen (UMCG). It has some 250 staff (including ~50 international staff) and a broad spectrum of activities:

  • research lines in systems genetics, autoimmune and intestinal disorders, neurodegenerative diseases, congenital syndromes, heart diseases, oncogenetics
  • hosts the Genomics Coordination Centre (offering systems genetics facilities) and the Genome Analysis Facility for large-scale genomic studies
  • clinical genetics, diagnostics and genetic counselling*
  • European surveillance of congenital anomalies (Eurocat)
  • teaching of BSc, MD and MSc students, and training of clinical fellows

Highlights of 2016

  • Pilot study offering preconception genetic screening to 100 couples wanting to start a family more
  • 5GPM (Five genes per minute) : Rapid diagnostic whole genome sequencing for critically ill newborns offers unique possibility to test all known disease genes simultaneously more
  • ERC Starting grant for Dr. Alexandra (Sasha) Zhernakova to study “ The role of the virome in shaping the gut ecosystem during the first year of life” more
  • NWO-VIDI grant for Dr. Morris Swertz to work on "Scalable 'big data' methods towards personalized genome diagnostics" more
  • Prof. Lude Franke was appointed a member of The Young Academy of the KNAW, a platform for top young scientists in the Netherlands
  • 2016 was a top year for major papers: on the microbiome in Science (more), on genes and immunity in Nature Medicine (more), and on big data being used to unravel disease processes in Nature Medicine (more)

Events in 2017

27 January 2017 PhD graduation of J.W. (Annet) Sollie, Free University of Amsterdam, on her thesis entitled "Reuse and sharing of electronic health record data with a focus on primary care and disese coding". Supervisors: Prof. M.E. Numans, Prof. R.H. Sijmons
22 March 2017 PhD graduation of Marc Jan Bonder on his thesis entitled: "The interplay between genetics, the microbiome, DNA-methylation & gene‚Äźexpression" at the Academy Building, Broerstraat 5, Groningen. Supervisor: Prof. Cisca Wijmenga
29 March 2017 PhD graduation of Esther Nibbeling on her thesis entitled: "The genetics of spinocerebellar ataxia and dystonia" at the Academy Building, Broerstraat 5, Groningen. Supervisor: Prof. Dineke Verbeek
