Axel Gosseries (Louvain): The Currency of intergenerational justice

Abstract:

In this talk, I will look at the challenges raised by the intergenerational context for a currency of justice. I will take resourcism as a starting point. I will discuss the
challenges it raises, both under the assumption of given preferences and under the more realistic assumption of dynamic preferences. I will explore three proposals: focusing on intangible resources, keeping options open and inculcating frugal preferences. I will also discuss whether resourcists have anything to say about the issue of substitution that is central to the sustainability debate. I will stress the specific role played by education as one of the ways to influence the content of future preferences.
