Teaching Talks

Teaching Talks is the number one podcast about academic teaching in Groningen, hosted by FEB's junior lecturer Simon Fokkema. In every episode, he will invite guests to talk about a new topic related to academic teaching.

Season 3 (2024-2025)

Episode 1: Diversity and Inclusion in Academic Teaching
In this first episode of the third season of the Teaching Talks podcast, Simon discusses the topic of diversity and inclusion in academic teaching. Together with Ella Sebamalai (Diversity Officer at the Faculty of Economics and Business), he discusses the advantages and criticism of diversity and inclusion.

Season 2 (2023-2024)

Episode 1: The strategic side of academic teaching
In this episode, Simon talks with Manda Broekhuis (Vice Dean of Education within FEB) about the strategic side of academic education. She tells all about her responsibilities as a Vice Dean of Education, and she discusses some current issues and concerns that the education of FEB is facing. How is FEB planning to handle these challenges?
Episode 2: Open Educational Resources
In this episode of the Teaching Talks podcast, Simon Fokkema has a discussion with Martijn Blikmans (an Academic information specialist) about open educational resources. They talk for example about how open educational resources can be used in academic teaching, and about the future of open education in general.
Episide 3: Innovation in Academic Teaching
In this episode of the teaching talks podcast, host Simon Fokkema talks with Marc Kramer about innovation in academic teaching. Marc was awarded 'lecturer of the year 2018', and shares the experience that he has with trying out new things in the classroom.
Episode 4: Active Learning Classrooms
In this episode, Simon has a discussion with Bas Baalmans (managing director and lecturer at career services) about active learning classrooms. What are these rooms precisely? What are the main benefits of using these rooms? Are there any obstacles in using such rooms? And what would the future of active learning classrooms look like? Episode 5: AI in Academic Education
In this episode, Simon talks with Koos Winnips (E-Learning coordinator at FEB) about how AI influences academic education. Amongst others, they discuss what the key benefits and challenging to using AI in higher education are, and they discuss how the use of AI in academic teaching will develop in the future.

Episode 6: Flipped Classroom
In this episode of the Teaching Talks podcast, Simon has an elaborate discussion with Björn Mitzinneck (PhD coordinator and Associate Professor at the department of Innovation Management & Strategy). They talk about a specific course that Björn is organizing, where he uses a flipped classroom structure. Amongst others, they discuss benefits, challenges and implications to this approach.
Episode 7: Special: Christmas Episode

In this Christmas themed special of the Teaching Talks podcast, Simon discusses some provocative statements about academic teaching with three different guests who have been on the podcast earlier (Martin Pit, Sandra Nijgh & Marcel Hulleman). The discussion is about the effectiveness of traditional lectures and grades, and goes into the relevance of technology in the classroom and homework (or: preparational work).
Episode 8: Crossover Episode: Point of Academic Teaching
This episode of the Teaching Talks podcast is a special episode, given that it is a cross-over episode. Together with two other podcasters (Degrees of Freedom podcast and FSE radio), the point of academic teaching will be discussed.

Season 1 (2022-2023)

Episode 1: An academic career at FEB
In the first episode of Teaching Talks, Simon Fokkema talks with lecturers Eveline Hage, Oskar Roemeling and Evelien Croonen about academic teaching at FEB. What does it entail to have a career as lecturer at this faculty, and how do you actually start up this career? While trying to form a better understanding of what academic teaching precisely entails, it becomes clear that an academic career at FEB includes much more than just reading articles and books.
Episode 2: The influence of ChatGPT on academic teaching
In this second episode, host Simon Fokkema and his colleagues talk about ChatGPT, a topic that has been widely discussed since its launch in November. This new natural language processing tool, which is driven by AI technology, can answer questions and assist you with a variety of tasks, but also raises questions. For example, what does this mean for academic teaching and learning? And how do you as a lecturer deal with all these new challenges?
Episode 3: Academic teaching vs secondary teaching
Because academic teaching is the main topic of Teaching Talks, host Simon Fokkema thought it would be interesting for the third episode to compare this to secondary teaching. Together with guest speaker Falco Braaksma, an economics teacher at a secondary school, he delves deeper into the commonalities and differences between these two forms of teaching.
Episode 4: The role of the junior lecturer
In this episode of the Teaching Talks podcast, host Simon Fokkema elaborates on the role that junior lecturers have in academic teaching. Along with Marcel Hulleman, a junior lecturer within the department of Innovation Management & Strategy, he discusses what the main advantages of the role are and what challenges junior lecturers still tend to run into.
Episode 5: Thesis supervision
In this episode of the Teaching Talks podcast, host Simon Fokkema delves into a specific type of academic teaching; thesis supervision. With Martin Pit (a junior lecturer and PhD candidate within the department of Innovation Management & Strategy), he talks about thesis students, managing a thesis supervision process and the challenges that students and teachers tend to run into in thesis supervision.
Episode 6: The evolution of academic teaching
In this episode of the Teaching Talks podcast, host Simon Fokkema delves into how academic teaching changed over the years. Along with Janita Vos (an experienced academic teacher within the department of Innovation Management & Strategy - who will retire at the end of this year), he talks about how the evolution of academic teaching went, and what the biggest differences are between academic teaching in the past and nowadays.
Episode 7: Academic escape room
In this episode of the Teaching Talks podcast, host Simon Fokkema delphs into a new idea within academic education; implementing a real-life escape room. Together with Sandra Nijgh (a junior lecturer within the department of Innovation Management & Strategy), he talks about her experience with setting up an escape room (which she accomplished together with dr. Eveline Hage & dr. Ileana Maris-de Bresser) and about the implications of the general idea of the academic escape room.
Episode 8: Technological tools in academic teaching
In this episode of the Teaching Talks podcast, host Simon Fokkema talks about technological tools that can be implemented in Academic Teaching. Together with Edin Smailhodzic (an Assistant Professor within the department of Innovation Management & Strategy), he discusses what technological tools are commonly used and what the main advantages of these tools are. They also discuss some of the drawbacks of using technological tools.
