SECOPS Conference: A Look Back Through Photos
On Thursday, May 21 - Saturday, May 23, 2026, KNIR and Groningen University organised an international conference Settler Colonial Paradigms at Groningen University.
Here is a look back at three successful and inspiring days, captured in photos by Prof Clemens Six. The first two days were filled with presentations at Groningen University. On Saturday afternoon, the participants went on an excursion to the Dutch Colonies of Benevolence. Conference programme






































































This conference was organized in the context of the Settler Colonial Paradigms (SECOPS) research programme of the Royal Netherlands Institute in Rome (KNIR) and is generously funded by the University of Groningen (UG). The conference was further organized in collaboration with and additional funding from: the Centre for Historical Studies (CHS/ICOG); the Institute for War, Holocaust, and Genocide Studies (NIOD); the CRASIS interfaculty research institute; the Rudolf Agricola School for Sustainable Development; Archon – Research School of Archaeology; Museum de Proefkolonie; Stichting Maatschappij van Weldadigheid.
Open Access Book
In 2025, the project already led to the publication of an Open Access Book Settler Colonialism as a Structure? Structural Logics, Long-Term Patterns, and Critical Reflections, edited by Jeremia Pelgrom and Clemens Six.
