RefWorks stops in 2025
Due to financial and technical reasons, the current RefWorks contract will not be renewed. Do you use RefWorks? Then switch to our other reference manager, EndNote.
From April 2025, the link between RefWorks and Word will no longer work within the RUG-UWP environment. UMCG employees can still use the new Word plugin, RefWorks Citation Manager, until the end of 2025. From 1 January 2026, RefWorks will no longer be available for the RUG and UMCG.
What are the implications for me?
In just a few steps, it is possible to transfer RefWorks references to another reference manager such as EndNote. Unfortunately, folders and attachments (such as PDFs) cannot be transferred automatically. Also, the EndNote Cite-While-You-Write plugin is not compatible with RefWorks Write-n-Cite, so it is recommended that a text document started with RefWorks is also finished with RefWorks before switching to a new programme.
Available reference managers
EndNote remains the UG's only official reference manager. EndNote can be used online, or downloaded via the software portal Iris.

If you don't want to use EndNote, Zotero is an alternative reference manager. Zotero is an open source programme suitable for academic research. Zotero is available in the UG UWP start menu. Please note: this is the free version of the product with limited storage capacity. The UG does not have a licence for Zotero and we therefore offer limited support.

How do transfer my references from RefWorks to Endnote?
Step 1: Open RefWorks and select the preferred folder
Step 2: Click on 'Share' and 'Export references'
Step 3: Choose 'All references in [name folder]' and 'RIS format'. Click 'Export'
Step 4: The export file is downloaded; rename if necessary
Het exportbestand wordt nu gedownload via de browser. Eventueel kan de naam aangepast worden voor een beter overzicht. In dit voorbeeld zou het Autism.RIS worden.
Step 5: Open EndNote and create a new Group (folder) with the same name as the RefWorks folder
Step 6: Click on File > Import > File via the drop-down menu to import the export file into EndNote
Step 7: Choose the correct export file and the RIS import option. Click on Import
Step 8: Click on the top reference, then use CTRL-A to select all references
Step 9: Click the right-mouse button to open the menu. Click 'Add References To' and choose the preferred Group (folder)
