[English version below] Zelf een gebied creëren waarbinnen alle mensen gelukkig en gezond oud worden, oftewel een Man Made Blue Zone, spreekt enorm tot de verbeelding.

Blue Zones namaken

Man Made Blue Zone creëert.”

Man Made Blue Zone daadwerkelijk kunt realiseren.

A roadmap for Man Made Blue Zones

Creating an area in which all people grow old happily and healthy, or a Man Made Blue Zone, speaks to the imagination. However, the specific steps that must be taken to realise such an area are often unclear. Prof. dr. Dr Koert van Ittersum will therefore share a step-by-step plan for the realisation of Man Made Blue Zones, during his keynote presentation at our lustrum conference (3 April 2018). Get a preview in this article.

Copying Blue Zones
“Creating a Man Made Blue Zone is extremely complex. The regular Blue Zones have developed over a period of decades or sometimes centuries. They have many unique characteristics. For example, they are often rural and there are relatively many people with low incomes, which makes them very special. That is not something that you can simply copy and that should not be the intention,” says Van Ittersum.

“What we see with these Blue Zones, however, is that the living environment is an important cause for the relatively high age that people reach there. This creates the assumption that intervention in the living environment of people can contribute to a healthy lifestyle. This is already happening, for example by creating additional cycle paths to stimulate more physical activity or to arrange a supermarket differently in order to promote healthy eating choices. What is less known is what the effect is on a more collective area when you introduce a whole bunch of these kinds of interventions in an area, or when you create a Man Made Blue Zone.”

“There is a lot of talk about the Blue Zone and Man Made Blue Zones. There is, however, no logical methodical step-by-step plan with which you can actually realise a Man Made Blue Zone. Answering questions such as; what are you going to do first, what can you do and what do you have to take into consideration?”

Roadmap for policy makers
Van Ittersum wants to provide for these concrete recommendations for the realisation of Man Made Blue Zones. He explains: “I am currently working on a methodical step-by-step plan for realising a Man Made Blue Zone. This roadmap can help policymakers to think about whether and how interventions can be done in a neighbourhood or area that contribute positively to the health of the habitat. Within a Man Made Blue Zone, we distinguish five different themes that contribute to a healthy life. These are: physical activity, healthy diets, social engagement, life purpose and healthy living environments. These are also central to the conference. The step-by-step plan will include, among other things, who the experts in these different areas are, so that you know who to ask for which advice.”

“Segmentation plays an important role in the step-by-step plan, that is: who has what need. It is possible to distinguish sub-segments within a neighbourhood or village. Certain groups that, for example, need extra attention in the field of nutrition, while for other groups this is true for social involvement.”

The role of marketing
Koert van Ittersum is Professor of Marketing and Consumer Well-Being. Based on his knowledge and experience, he believes that his field of expertise is particularly capable of making the concept of Man Made Blue Zones more concrete. “In marketing you develop a marketing plan when, for example, you want to bring a new product to the market. By developing a structured roadmap, I actually do the same for Man Made Blue Zones. Marketing also develops solutions for people's needs. In this case, it is about the need to be healthy and happy. For many years, I have been working with individual consumers and nutrition together with colleagues from the RUG and UMCG. There I studied from a marketing perspective what we can contribute to that.”

“During the Healthwise lustrum conference, there are many experts from different faculties who share their knowledge about specific themes that contribute to a healthy life. In addition, entrepreneurs and organisations share how they have put this into practice. With my step-by-step plan, I hope to give the visitors of the Healthwise lustrum conference points of departure for the realisation of a Man Made Blue Zone.”
