North Korean Wellbeing

Most of my research is focused on the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK, or North Korea). I am particularly interested in international movements seeking to support wellbeing of North Korean people. My main focus in this space is humanitarian work inside the country, but I am also interested in wider people-focused engagement as well as human rights advocacy work.

I am currently engaged in two projects under this stream:

Transnational Engagement with North Korea: The Potential for Experience Based Learning

Collaborator: Mr James Banfill (Chulalongkorn University)

Funded by IFES/MOU, this project explores the potential of experiential learning, such as simulation and/or serious games, to inform and prepare individuals for effective engagement with North Korea.

Transitional Justice in Korea: A Role for Australia?

Collaborators: Dr Danielle Chubb (Deakin University), Dr Sarah Son (Sheffield University)

Funded by the Academy of Korean Studies, this project considers how Australia may support current and future transitional justice initiatives on the Korean peninsula. The project included public lecture by the Chair of the UN Commission of Inquiry, The Hon. Michael Kirby AC CMG, and North Korean defector and human rights activist, Timothy Cho. Humanitarian education and pedagogy

This emerging stream of research focuses on issues of teaching humanitarianism, particularly in higher education. Connected to this stream, I am the co-chair of the Humanitarian Education and Pedagogy Working Group at the International Humanitarian Studies Association.

In addition to the specific context of the DPRK and the specific thematic area of humanitarian education, I have a small stream of work on global humanitarian issues including localisation, decoloniality, and leadership.
