Book: The Politics of Indenty in Brazil

Flávio is currently writing a book on politicians' viewpoints on the use of their own identities. Based on ethnographic research among Brazilian political candidates and election campaign workers (2018-2022), the book will analyze how they make sense of the changing political landscape during the Bolsonaro administration, their own role in it, and the strategies they use to claim legitimacy for the political use of their own identities.

BROKERS (2017-2021)

Flávio Eiró was a postdoctoral researcher in the project BROKERS – Participatory urban governance between democracy and clientelism: brokers and (in)formal politics (http://www.anthrobrokers.com/). This project was funded by the European Research Council (ERC) under the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme (grant agreement No. 679614), and hosted by the Anthropology and Development Studies department at Radboud University Nijmegen.

This ethnographic research project investigates the role of brokerage – the social mechanism of mediation between different groups or levels in society – in participatory urban governance, and its implications for state-citizenship engagement, political representation and decision making. It asks: what is the role of brokerage in participatory urban governance, in both its formal and informal dimensions, and what is its impact on state-citizen engagement, political representation and decision making regarding the distribution of resources?

This project compares brokerage in four different cities, two in the Global North and two in the Global South, in order to develop a new theoretical framework for understanding the role and impact of brokerage in participatory urban governance. These cities are Rotterdam (the Netherlands), Manchester (UK), Medellín (Colombia) and Recife (Brazil).
