Roberto Lo Conte

As of August 1st, 2023 Roberto Lo Conte joined our team as assistant professor in Quantum Materials. Roberto’s research interest is focused on topological properties of solid-state systems. His goal is to implement a research agenda on the investigation of magnet/superconductor hybrid quantum systems, where emergent effects driven by the interplay between magnetism, superconductivity, and spin-orbit coupling generate new functionalities applicable in ultra-low dissipation spintronics and quantum information technologies. The focus will be on unveiling the nature of those effects and learning how to engineer them at the atomic scale. Roberto is an expert in magnetic microscopy and spectroscopy techniques like e.g., spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy (SP-STM) and spectroscopy (STS) and spin-polarized low-energy electron microscopy (SPLEEM). After his PhD in Mainz (Germany) he moved to the University of California, Berkeley (USA) where he conducted two independent postdoctoral projects. The second project started in January 2018, enabled by a Marie SkÅ‚odowska Curie Individual Fellowship and pursued in collaboration with the University of Hamburg. After his return to Europe, in 2021 he was awarded an individual research grant from the German Research Foundation (DFG). Welcome Roberto!
