Gert-Jan Euverink Professor-Director of green life sciences programme BioBRUG

Dr G.J.W. Euverink has been appointed Professor of Products and Processes for Biotechnology in the Biobased Economy at the Institute for Technology and Management (ITM) of the Department of Industrial Engineering and Management of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences.

With this appointment, Euverink will become Professor-Director of BioBRUG, a programme designed to strengthen green life sciences in the north of the Netherlands by building a network with regional SMEs working in the field of the biobased economy. Master’s students of Industrial Engineering and Management will be involved in research and feasibility issues relevant to SMEs.

Rabobank


The Rabobank, joint initiator of the chair, is enthusiastic about the BioBRUG programme. Dirk Duijzer, head of the Directorate of Cooperation, Management and Sustainability [Directoraat Cooperatie, Bestuur & Duurzaamheid] of Rabobank Nederland: ‘The advantages of a biobased economy are enormous. It is important for academia and business to work together to get this off the ground. We have every confidence in the cooperation with BioBRUG and Prof. Euverink.

Cooperation programme


BioBRUG is a cooperation between SNN (Northern Netherlands Provinces), Rabobank, BioMCN, the province of Groningen and the municipality of Groningen. The project is partly financed by the European Regional Development Fund and the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Agriculture and Innovation (EL&I), PID programme [Pieken in de Delta].

Curriculum Vitae


Gert-Jan Euverink (1966) studied biology in Groningen and gained a PhD from the same institution in 1995 with research on microbial physiology. His supervisor was Prof. Lubbert Dijkhuizen. He then became a researcher at the Netherlands Institute for Carbohydrate Research TNO (NIKO TNO). In 1998 he founded BioExplore, a facility for High Throughput Screening at the University of Groningen, financed by Mibiton. In 2004 he became programme director of the Technology Top Institute Wetsus, centre of excellence for sustainable water technology in Leeuwarden.
