Literary and cultural studies

Are you curious, eager to learn and ready to shape the role of the arts and the media in society and culture? Then you are the right person for this Research Master!

The two-year Master's track in Literary and Cultural Studies is a specialization within the two Research Master's degrees in Literary Studies and in Arts and Culture.

Literary and Cultural Studies equips students with knowledge and skills to become researchers and experts on the role that the arts, literature and media play in society, now and in the past. The programme offers a rich multi- and interdisciplinary framework within which students can specialize in one of the following disciplines or combinations of disciplines, under close supervision of a highly qualified research faculty:

  • arts and culture education,
  • cognitive studies of arts, media and culture,
  • cultural studies,
  • digital humanities,
  • film studies,
  • history of art, architecture and landscape,
  • literary studies (literary theory and comparative literature, Anglophone, Dutch, German, Francophone, Hispanic, Italian, Russian, Scandinavian and Mid-Eastern literatures),
  • media and journalism studies,
  • music studies,
  • theatre and performance studies.

To better reflect the breadth of disciplines involved, the track will be called Arts, Media, and Literary Studies from 2018/2019 onwards.

  • Testimonial van Master's Ambassador Francesca Giro (LCS)

I'm currently focusing on avant garde women writers and sensory studies

My name is Francesca and I am a second year Research Master's track student of Literary and Cultural Studies from Italy. I did my Bachelor in American and German Literature at Ca' Foscari University in Venice and have always been very passionate about not only literature, but also music, film and fine arts.

After befriending some RUG students at a summer school, I grew curious about the University, came to visit and immediately fell in love with it. I started the regular 1-year Master's programme, but I distinctly felt that I wanted more engagement and intellectual independence from my studies. I then moved very happily to the Research Master's track, where I am currently focusing on avant garde women writers and sensory studies.

Read more about Francesca Giro and why she chose to study Literary and Cultural Studies in Groningen.
