Literary and cultural studies

How do the arts inspire individuals and what impact do they have on societies? How do literature, theatre, film, music, and the visual arts create new aesthetic forms, ideas, and practices - now and in the past? Find out in this Research MA.

The two-year Master's track in Literary and Cultural Studies is a specialization within the two Research Master's degrees in Literary Studies and in Arts and Culture.

The track in Literary and Cultural Studies provides you with an advanced investigation of the arts. You will focus specifically on the role the arts play in processes of cultural change. Also, you will study arts and culture in general and specialize in one of these art forms: literature, film, theatre, music, and multimedia forms.

The programme has a multi-disciplinary approach. You will study the arts from perspectives such as history, philosophy and sociology. In addition, the programme is closely related to the multidisciplinary research carried out at the Groningen Research Institute for the Study of Culture (ICOG).

This two-year, research-driven MA degree allows you to investigate the arts, their impact on society and life, and the vital role they play in cultural transformations on an advanced level. Through its unique multidisciplinary approach, the programme foregrounds intersections between different art forms and allows you to choose from historical, theoretical, as well as applied perspectives. At the same time, it enables you to focus on a specific art form of your choice by working with international specialists at close range. This Research MA hands you the intellectual tools to become a critical expert and shape tomorrow's cultural scenes.

The Research MA Literary and Cultural Studies profits from the multidisciplinary research carried out at the Groningen Research Institute for the Study of Culture (ICOG). To better reflect the breadth of disciplines involved, the track will be called Arts, Media, and Literary Studies from 2018/2019 onwards.
