The admission board will determine whether you are admissible based on your previous education (including courses you must still complete before the start of the master's) and submitted application form. In order to be admissible you must satisfy all course requirements. Therefore, carefully inspect these before applying, verify whether you will actually completely satisfy them all and provide all information requested in order to avoid disappointments.
Some weeks after the admission deadline you will be informed whether you are admissible for the master track(s) of your choice, whether you need to participate in the selection procedure and the next steps in your admission process. For more information see ‘How to apply’ and Application procedure.
Selection procedure
Most master's tracks have more admissible students than available places. This means that for these tracks you will have to participate in the selection procedure by means of a selection test. A few tracks do not require a selection procedure and allow you to be placed immediately. For more information see Selection procedure.
Premaster
When your previous education does not fully meet the entry requirements, you may be offered a customized premaster. After completion of this programme (within two years), you will be admitted to the master’s programme. The premaster only starts in September. For more information see the section below on premaster.
Please note that until all requirements have been met before the start of the master's programme (including courses and diploma, possible proof of language proficiency and tuition fees), your admissibility will be considered conditional.
Premaster (when not directly admissible to the master)
When your previous education does not fully meet the entry requirements, you may be offered a premaster programme to fill the gaps. This programme will bring your knowledge and skills to the required level to enter the master’s programme. After completion of this premaster programme (within two years), you will be admitted to the master’s programme. The premaster only starts in September and it is offered for the seven tracks mentioned below (to a limited number of students, by means of a lottery).

Admission requirements premaster
- No more than 60 EC deficiency with respect to the admission requirements
- Adequate basic statistical knowledge (at the level of the first year of a Dutch university psychology programme).
Procedure admission premaster
- Each track has a maximum number of premaster places available. You can sign up for one or two tracks (first and second choice).
- If you are admissible to the premaster, it will be decided by lot whether or not you can be admitted to the premaster of the track of your first choice.
- If you are not admitted, you will be placed on the waiting list for your first choice. You will also be selected by lot for a place in the track of your second choice. Possibly, if you are not admitted, you will be placed on the waiting list there as well.
- After some time, places will become available and you will move up on the waiting list and possibly be placed in one of the premaster tracks of your choice.
Your premaster programme
Once you have been assigned a premaster track place, you will draw up the planning of your programme together with one of our academic advisors.
Continuing to the master track
If you have completed the premaster within two years, you will be admitted to the track of your choice.
Costs
For an overview of the costs of a premaster programme, see Fee pre-master programmes.
Application
-
Register at studielink.nl for the (pre)master Psychology. Please choose the track of your first choice via Studielink
-
Apply with the University of Groningen for the (pre)master via the application* form. Through this form you can register for a possible second track.
-
Fill out the checklist and upload it with the application form. For an example of a filled in checklist see here.
Students from the Liberal Arts & Sciences college of the University of Groningen (UCG): please use this checklist. -
Apply by 1 March or 1 May (depending on the track of your first choice).
* Application for the master Psychology starting September 2024 is no longer possible due to the expiry of the application deadlines
Please note
-
You can only start the master if you have obtained your bachelor's degree before 1 September 2024.
-
Carefully make your choice of the preferred master track. Once placed, you cannot switch to other tracks. Even discontinuing your track and then applying for a different track is strongly disadvised, because even if you just started with your thesis, internship or skills course, you are not allowed to take these again in the new track. This means you would not be able to graduate in that track.
