NWO grant for Prof. Amina Helmi
The Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) has honoured the 4MOST project of Prof. Amina Helmi in the Investment Grant NWO Medium programme, one of a total of four projects honoured this year. Helmi is professor at the Kapteyn Institute, the research institute for astronomy at the University of Groningen.
The project, ‘4MOST throws light on the dynamics of the universe’, led by Helmi, has been awarded a budget of € 255,000. The project combines the forces of the Gaia satellite and the 4MOST spectrograph in Chile. It will enable researchers to determine the distribution of mass and the history of our Milky Way and throw light on the dark side of the universe.
Researchers like Helmi are heavily dependent on large-scale equipment for their work. NWO has an Investment Grant NWO Medium programme to fund facilities which are beyond the budget of individual research groups. Researchers can use the funding to purchase equipment and set up, link and enrich databases.
