FSE Criteria applying to course descriptions
Introduction course descriptions

If your qualification is not listed in the tab 'Qualifications exempt from providing course descriptions' above, you will need to provide course descriptions as part of your application. Course descriptions are usually issued by educational institutions and describe the content and aims of courses in your curriculum. These course descriptions are valuable to the Admissions Board as they are used to assess whether you have the required background knowledge in relevant subjects to start the BSc programme of your choice.

In order to fully reflect your background knowledge, it is very important that the course descriptions you provide are elaborate, complete and form a full overview of the courses you have completed/will be completing. Please note that each individual application can be evaluated only once. It is therefore important to make sure that the documents you provide meet the requirements of the University of Groningen application procedure. Providing incomplete or insufficient course descriptions may have consequences for your application for admission and/or for your eligibility for admission. Without (sufficient) course descriptions and checklists, your application file will be incomplete and will not be reviewed. If you have any doubts regarding the requirements applicable to your application documents, please do not hesitate to contact us or consult our Frequently Asked Questions section below.

Below you will find more information about the requirements, the required checklists and how to compile the course descriptions.

Course description requirements
  • The PDF file you provide should consist of the checklist and course descriptions of all relevant courses from your upper secondary education and, if applicable, higher education.
  • It is mandatory to use the relevant course description checklist(s) for Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and/or Biology as an index for your course descriptions.
  • Please provide the checklist with the course descriptions as 1 PDF file per subject (e.g. 1 PDF file for Mathematics-related courses, 1 PDF file for Physics related-courses et cetera). If you provide official course descriptions, these needs to be merged with the checklist.
  • Course descriptions must always be provided in either English or Dutch (unofficial translations are accepted.) If you translate your course descriptions, you do not need to provide the original version.
  • All courses listed in the checklist(s) and course descriptions must also be listed on your transcript(s) of your (to be) completed courses.
  • Official course descriptions such as course syllabi or curriculum descriptions issued by educational institutions or the ministry of education are preferred. If official course descriptions are not available (or if these are not elaborate enough in order for the Admissions Board to fully assess your background knowledge), you may also compile them yourself.
How to compile course descriptions
  • Find the relevant checklist in the overview below. Fill out the sections “1. General information” and “2. Course information”. Make sure the name of the courses match the names of the courses on your transcript.
  • On the last page of the checklist, under section “4. Your Course Descriptions” you fill in your course descriptions. If you have official course descriptions from an educational institution, then merge these together with the checklist. Note that if the official course descriptions are not in English, please translate these and provide only the English translation. If you compile your own course descriptions, add these at the end of the checklist. You can add as many pages as necessary.
  • Lastly, under section “3. Course Descriptions Information” fill out the overview with the relevant page/section number for each topic mentioned in your course descriptions. This makes it easier for the Admissions Board to find the relevant information in your course descriptions. Only fill in the page/section number for the topics which are actually mentioned in your course descriptions.

Frequently asked questions
What happens if the Admissions Board concludes that the curriculum is not equivalent to the relevant Dutch VWO (pre-university education) curriculum?

Should the Admission Board conclude based on your course descriptions that it has not been proven that the curriculum for the relevant subjects is equivalent to the relevant Dutch VWO curriculum in the same subjects, you will be required to obtain one of our accepted certificates to lift your deficiency.

In which cases do I need to provide course descriptions?

Some curricula have already been assessed by the Admissions Board. If this is the case, you will not need to upload course descriptions. To see if you are required to upload course descriptions, click the tab 'Qualifications exempted from providing course descriptions' above.

If your secondary education qualification exempts you from providing course descriptions, but you also conclude that you do not meet our subject specific requirements, please note that you can always include course descriptions of higher education courses (if applicable) which are relevant to our subject specific requirements (Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology), including relevant courses yet to be completed. The Admissions Board will then have to determine whether these courses may compensate for a deficiency based on your upper secondary education curriculum only.

What should the course descriptions include?

The descriptions of the curriculum must contain:

  • Aims/objectives of the course (learning outcomes);
  • Elaborate description of each topic taught in your course. A list of topics is not sufficient. Describe to what extent the different topics where taught in your courses.
  • Examples of exercises done as part of this course, especially example exams or tests taken in the last two years. Please add at least a couple examples from each course.
  • Skills on which the course focused.
Can you provide examples of course descriptions?

We can unfortunately not provide examples, as all course descriptions might look different. We advise you to read the instructions carefully and make sure your course descriptions include all the required information.

What if the course descriptions from my school are not elaborate enough?

If the official course descriptions do not meet all the requirements, you can add more information yourself. Please provide both the official course descriptions and your own added elaborations.
