To improve the efficiency of drug delivery to the brain two promising strategies have been proposed: the incorporation of drugs into targeted nanoparticles, and the use of stem cells engineered to produce pharmaceuticals. The work described in this thesis focuses on the development of such novel brain drug delivery devices, and their visualization in vitro and in vivo.
