Collection

The University Museum's collection covers four centuries of scientific history and consists of around one-hundred thousend objects: from scienctific instruments to fossils, anatomical preparations, photographs and documents.

The museum also curates art objects in the Academy Building, such as the collection of professor's portraits in the Senate room.

Only a part of the extensive collection is visible in the museum today.

Information and images

We endeavour to comply with requests for information about the collection, and requests for images of collection items as much as possible. In some cases privacy and/or copyright restrictions prohibit this. We also do not have images of all collection items.

Consulting and loans

Consulting the collection is only possible by appointment and under certain conditions. Please note that we sometimes are obliged to reject or postpone a request.

The University Museum Groningen gladly loans its objects to cultural insititutions and exhibitions outside the University of Groningen (RUG).

We have worked out a loan procedure in order to be sure objects are exhibited safely.

Donating objects to the collection

The University Museum manages, collects and displays objects on the history of the university and science.

The collection of the University Museum consists of a number of sub-collections, including an extensive medical collection, a natural sciences collection, a psychology collection, a historical collection and a rich ethnological collection.

Do you possess an object that you think would be a great addition to our collection and would you like to donate it to the University Museum? We kindly ask you to fill out the form collection donation (in Dutch). We will contact you as soon as possible to see if the object fits with our collection.
