Dr. Raphael Hunsucker has been awarded the Van Woudenberg Dissertation Prize by the Friends of the KNIR Foundation for his PhD Dissertation 'Refounding Rome: Ktistic Renewal in the Augustan Age and Late Antiquity' (Radboud University, Nijmegen, 2025).
The Van Woudenberg Dissertation Prize is awarded to a researcher who has recently completed their PhD and has made inspiring use of a residency at the KNIR in support of their doctoral research.
The Prize is awarded once every 2 years by the Friends of the KNIR Foundation. It is named after Gerda van Woudenberg, translator and professor of Dutch Language and Literature at the University of Rome La Sapienza. The prize is paid from the proceeds of her bequest to the Foundation Friends of the KNIR and includes an award of €3,000. Of this amount, €1,000 is awarded as an unrestricted personal prize. The remaining €2,000 is designated for the organisation of a workshop at the KNIR, either on the topic of the dissertation or on related follow-up research, in consultation with the KNIR staff.
