The prime objective of the URSI's education programme (organized in close cooperation with the Netherlands Graduate School of Urban and Regional Research: Nethur) is to give its PhD candidates a solid foundation for independent research. The programme emphasises the knowledge and skills they need to write a dissertation, which is the proof of an individual's proficiency in empirical research. Some of the information and training is general in nature and is taught in seminars. Other aspects are more specialised and adapt a more individualised format. URSI’s own PhD candidates have priority in enrolment for the courses.
Besides the PhD education programme URSI is also responsible for the Research Master's programme Regional Studies. Since September 2006, both PhD education and Research Master take place within the Graduate School Spatial Sciences.
