My research focuses on how marginalized people challenge the status quo and engage into social change by applying experimental research designs and methods in the lab as well in the field. Within this domain I follow three main lines of research in a systematic way: (1) social and cultural change in developing countries, (2) intergroup relations, and (3) responses to social discrimination.
My main interest at this point centers on the theme of the social psychology of cultural development. My research interest has been on the study of social changes that are caused by development aid in developing countries. In this context, my research focuses on the (often unintended) consequences of aid projects that introduce ‘modern’ innovations in developing countries such as ICTs, microfinance, novel education initiatives, and energy access. I am currently working on projects in Ethiopia, Argentina, China, India, Rwanda, Mexico, Rwanda, Sri Lanka, and Turkey.
