Educational Evaluation

It is important for the UG to know how its students and staff experience education. Team Educational Institutional Research (EIR) draws up questionnaires for this purpose, analyzes the outcomes and reports these to boards and quality assurance staff. 

On the one hand, the university wants to be able to benchmark with other universities, but on the other hand, it is also important to ask questions that are relevant to the specific situation in our university. The National Student Survey (NSE) and National Alumni Survey (NAE) are national surveys that enable benchmarking. To make the results of the NSE more insightful, they are retrievable by program and faculty in the Business Intelligence portal. 

An example of an education survey that our team provides is the PhD survey. This project is a combination of a national and local questionnaire.

Since 2020 the UG also has its own student and teacher survey to pick up signals early and monitor policy progress. Team EIR invites students and staff to these surveys no more than once a year to share their experiences and opinions on topics relevant to the UG that have not yet been covered in other surveys, such as welfare or the Strategic Plan. The results of these surveys are then discussed in the Onderwijsberaad.

Starting in the academic year in 2024, the above surveys will be incorporated as much as possible into the StudentLines project.

How is it going with the study progress of first-year students after the introduction of a new BSA criterion? How do students who enter a program with a so-called "zachte knip" fare compared to other students? How do grades and credits develop over the years?  What does a student's path through the program's curriculum actually look like? To answer questions like these, we analyze student data at the RUG and report the results to boards, quality assurance staff, policy staff, and other stakeholders.

Team Educational Institutional Research analyzes RUG-wide educational data to answer questions, discover trends, or measure effects of (policy-based) interventions. Parties such as administrators, policy officers, and project leaders can make informed choices with regards to policy and recommendations on the basis of our analyses and reports.

The data we use are mainly obtained from the BI-portal (the central Business Intelligence data warehouse of the RUG). We then analyze this data using various data-analysis and data-science techniques, utilizing software such as Excel and SPSS as well as programming languages such as R.

In our data analytics we focus on providing insights into conclusions and trends that are present in the data. We do this by documenting the analysis results in reports using visualizations accompanied by textual explanations. Visualizations can also be offered in the form of a dashboard, allowing the data to be explored in a more dynamic way. For this we are working closely together with the UG-wide Learning Analytics project that is investigating what effective forms for visualizing educational data are.

Is a new UG-wide educational platform being introduced? Is a digital tool being used on a large scale in education? If so, Team Educational Institutional Research (EIR) is ready to investigate the effects and satisfaction of these changes.

Working method

Team Educational Institutional Research regularly evaluates projects, policy changes and other UG-wide interventions in order to adjust projects or measure effects. On the basis of our research, administrators, policy officers and project leaders can make well-founded policy choices and recommendations.
