Educational Design and Advice

Advice and support for (re)design of curricula, courses, and assessments can be provided at many different levels. ESI supports teachers, faculty boards, support staff and others in education.

As educational consultants, we advise and support in the (re)design of curricula (minors and programs), individual courses, MOOCs, assessments. Everything is done according to the educational strategy, pedagogical principles and didactic approaches of the RUG. Besides this consulting, we provide workshops Blended Active Learning, guide and facilitate educational innovations including AI, Analytics for Teaching and Learning, Educational Video Making, Active Learning Classrooms, et cetera.

Course (re)design

Course (re)design

New courses are being created all the time at the university to meet the needs of programmes. Courses routinely evolve based on new research, student feedback, and innovative teaching practices. The educational consultants from Team Educational Design & Development (TEDD) can support this process from the foundations of course (re)design, including reviewing the constructive alignment of your course: do the learning outcomes, teaching strategies, and assessment align with one another? In consultation or workshops with an educational consultant, individual teachers or teaching teams can explore different methods of course delivery, structure, formative and summative assessment, student support, and active learning.

Curriculum (re)design

Curriculum (re)design

Curriculum (re)design is the foundation of teaching across the university. There are many reasons for a curriculum (re)design, such as seeking to enrich educational pathways on specific programmes, planning for or responding to an Educational Inspection (accreditation), or developing new interdisciplinary teaching with other programmes of the university.

If you as a program director or coordinator of a learning line want to (re)design (part of) the curriculum, Team Educational Design & Development (TEDD) can help to support curriculum development, renewal, or redesign, with or without IT, in many ways, including project support, consultations sessions, or workshops. TEDD has expertise in the creation of programme learning outcomes, student trajectories and skills development, balancing core and elective modules, and more.

Additionally, with any curriculum (re)design the choice of suitable assessment methods is essential. TEDD has experts in assessment who can support in making sure the methods chosen are of the highest possible quality and appropriate to the programme learning outcomes.

You can reach out to Team Educational Design & Development or your faculty’s Embedded Expert for further information.

Assessment (re)design and advice

Assessment (re)design and advice

Assessment is the process of evaluating and providing feedback on knowledge, skills, attitudes and behaviours of students in relation to the learning outcomes of their courses and study programmes, both during and at the end of said courses/study programs. The assessment consultants can support teachers, teams, coordinators and directors of education in reflecting on and (further) developing the assessment of their courses, learning tracks and study programmes. Examples of topics that could be addressed in consultation or custom-made workshops: (re)designing assessment, formative/continuous assessment, developing assessment programmes, writing faculty assessment plans or effect of AI on assessment.

Innovative use of digital tools for teaching and learning

Innovative use of Digital tools for teaching and learning

At the University of Groningen we have several digital tools available that enhance teaching and/or learning. Team Educational Design and Development (TEDD) has experience in how to effectively use and evaluate those digital tools. These are the current tools that are widely used at the UG: FeedbackFruits, Traintool, Kaltura PollEverywhere, SOWISO and Perusall. If you as a teacher would like to work with these tools, or have questions about possible use of other digital tools, please consult us.

You can find more detailed information at EDU Support on all the digital tools available. Many of the tools are available directly via the digital learning environment, Brightspace. We can also advise and assist you in using Brightspace in your courses to the fullest extent, whether in combination with the other digital tools, or without.

Online course (MOOC) development and support

Online course (MOOC) development and support

Creating a full online course for a global audience is a challenging step that usually takes 9-12 months to complete. ESI experts have produced over 70 full online courses and can support this process in many ways. Pre-project we can assist teachers/researchers with the grant and budget proposal.

We are experienced in managing the timeline of the process and help you focus on what is needed during parts of the project. Additionally, we organise workshops on online course design to help you design and write materials yourself. This may be useful during the project, but these skills will also benefit you once the project is over.

We also support the filming process by reviewing storyboards, finding AV support (inside or outside the university), directing and coaching during video productions and reviewing video content.

Finally, we review all pieces written and have student assistants to put all materials online. Afterwards we create an evaluation report and assist you in making necessary improvements.

For more information, examine our MOOC development website or reach out to Team Educational Design & Development.

Educational video design and production support

Educational video design and production support

Creating effective educational videos is not always easy to do and can be a source of insecurity for lecturers. Although a lot of information on how to use and create video for education can be found on edusupport , you as a teacher may feel the need for support in writing / reviewing storyboards, finding AV support (inside or outside the university), directing and coaching during video productions and reviewing video content. We organise workshops on storyboard writing to help you write materials yourself. We can also help you visualise videos so that the message will come across more effectively.

Analytics for Teaching and Learning

Analytics for Learning and Teaching

Analytics for learning and teaching is the process of collecting, analysing, and interpreting data related to educational activities to better understand and improve the learning process.

Its current formal use within the University of Groningen is limited to a project within a number of faculties. In that project we are aiming to provide both teachers and students with dashboards visualising the progress towards the intended attainment level of a course. The ideal situation is that teachers can make informed decisions on their next teaching activity based on the information provided on the current knowledge level of the students on grouplevel. On an individual level students get insight on their knowledge progress in a specific course so far and they can make informed decisions on their future effort to study those parts of the content where they lag behind.

Embedded Experts per Faculty

Embedded experts

Embedded educational experts (or in short Embedded Experts) are pedagogical advisors of ESI who work for teachers at a designated faculty. The experts have a broad expertise. They are available for one-on-one consultations on education-related questions teachers might have. If they cannot answer questions directly, they will know where to find the right expertise within ESI.
