Structure/Function Relationships in Materials

Three Dutch materials research schools: Zernike Institute for Advanced Materials, Groningen; Institute for Molecules and Materials, Nijmegen, and MESA+ Institute for Nanotechnology, Enschede, are jointly organizing a summer school/workshop for PhD students entitled “Structure/Function Relationships in Materials". The workshop will be held on the island of Ameland from 6th to 11th of September 2015.

The theme “Structure/Function Relationships in Materials” covers a broad interdisciplinary field within physics and chemistry. International experts will give tutorials and stimulate discussions on a wide range of topics including topology/topological insulators, thermoelectric materials, nanospintronics/spin heterostructures & transport, as well as 0, 1, and 2 dimensional materials . The underlying theme we aim to explore is how the structure of these disparate classes of materials impact their functionality, and furthermore, how we can use such knowledge to enhance particular behavior by modifying their structural properties.

The workshop will consist of lectures and additional discussions. Active participation by the PhD students is expected, including the obligatory presentation of a poster about their own research (not necessarily coinciding with the topic of the workshop). The lecturers are explicitly asked to give tutorial presentations with emphasis on a basic understanding of their subjects, which culminate with their views on the present day understanding and challenges of their specific topics.
