University of Groningen professors
Which types of appointment are distinguished?
In law there are two types of professors, ordinary professors and professors with endowed chairs. Ordinary professors are appointed by the university. The ordinary professor category can be subdivided into Professor 1, Professor 2 and University Reader/Associate Professor. The difference between them is based on the content of the position. Professors with endowed chairs are appointed by a legal entity, usually a foundation or association. Endowed chairs are used to enable experts in specific fields to teach modules at the request of an external institution. The field is often so specialized that inaugurating a structural chair is not an option.
What is a University Reader/Associate Professor?
An appointment as University Reader/Associate Professor results from the university tenure-track policy, where researchers can earn a fixed appointment (tenure) by performing well. The appointment applies for 5 years. After this period, an assessment will decide whether the University Reader will be appointed as an ordinary professor 2.
What is an honorary professor?
An honorary professor has a university appointment without salary. The appointment is temporary, usually for 5 years.
What is the position of a professor?
The professor plays a central role in teaching and research and the organization thereof. He or she is responsible for the quality and the orientation of the tasks to be performed within the department or unit. The professor is also responsible for the organization of the department and must contribute to the organization and policy of the faculty.
