SPOT ON 2023-2024 Theatre Seminar - Arts, Culture and Media

Abstract

This presentation draws from Pamela Karimi’s forthcoming book, Women, Art, Freedom: Artists and Street Politics in Iran (Leuven University Press, 2024) which focuses on the link between art and activism in Iran, particularly following the 2022 Woman, Life, Freedom uprising. The presentation goes beyond analysing popular protest art to highlight the significant, yet less visible, grassroots movements and the crucial role of artists in driving guerrilla interventions and peaceful protests inside Iran. By examining the contributions of Iran-based artists within the broader historical and theoretical context of Iran’s protest art, and emphasising the connection between public activism, women’s rights, and feminist perspectives, the talk underscores the artists’ essential role in promoting global justice and equality.
