Title: Biomass as substitute for petroleum fuels. Potential, obstacles and uncertainties.

Summary:
What role can biomass play in decarbonizing the transport sector. What options are there to convert biomass into biofuels. How do these options compare with each other and with petroleum fuels? What impact can BECCS (bio-energy with carbon capture and storage) have on GHG emissions? These questions are important to determine if biofuels are to be a part of our future sustainable energy infrastructure, if they should only be a part during the transition, or if biofuels are just a bad idea. To determine this I have analysed the technical, economic and climate performance of several biofuel conversion options. The results from this analysis were applied on the IEA projections of the transport sector in the United States in 2050 and a potential deployment pathway was devised. Lastly, I will give an overview of the uncertainties typical in this kind of analysis and how these uncertainties can (partly) be addressed.
