Title: Research on e-infrastructures to create e-infrastructures for research

Abstract:

Scientific computing and data science methods have become crucial in an increasing number of science disciplines. Consequently, e-infrastructures have become key enablers of research. More specifically, the demand for high-performance computing (HPC) and the ability to store and process extreme-scale data sets are ramping up, while in parallel there are emerging new needs coming from research, like support of more complex workflows, enhanced interactivity, or collaborative research.

In this talk, we focus on e-infrastructures that provide HPC capabilities, explore key challenges, and discuss the need for research on architectures and technologies to realise future e-infrastructures.

We will start with research on conventional processing technologies, before zooming out to the distributed e-infrastructure level. Here we will cover different recent trends, including the requirement for federating infrastructure services, the emerging need for supporting digital twins, and the extension of HPC to the compute continuum. The final part is devoted to an outlook towards the future, where e-infrastructures will more and more leverage non-conventional computing technologies.
