Title: High Performance Event-based Systems

Abstract:

The Internet of Things (IoT) has brought with it a global wave that promises to exploit the rapid growth in modern technology (e.g., sensors, actuators, cloud computing, etc.) in order to detect and react to live situations. To this end, many IoT enabled and situation-aware applications are fast emerging in the areas of healthcare, traffic management, surveillance, smart grid, etc. However, these applications have very demanding requirements, resulting in a series of challenges. Not only are they latency sensitive and data intensive, but also they require complex processing and resource provisions for large and fluctuating volumes of workload. In this talk, I will focus on our work on event-based middleware systems that tackles some of the aforementioned challenges of modern applications. As aggregating and processing data at a centralized cloud platform is no longer adequate, our solutions enable computations to be performed on distributed resources throughout the network hierarchy, including routers, fog nodes, and edge devices. In doing so, our contributions include addressing requirements such as low latency event processing, resource efficiency, high quality of result, and system scalability, thus paving the way to high performance event-based systems.
