Title: Methods and Design Approaches for Fluid Dynamics Visualization

Abstract:

Steffen Frey and Christian Kehl are assistant professors at the Scientific Visualization and Computer Graphics (SVCG) group of the Bernoulli institute, led by Jiri Kosinka. Together, they research different aspects in the visualization of fluid-flow processes and supervise student projects at BSc and MSc level. Furthermore, their course teaching incorporates the flow visualization aspects of their research. Together with the Computational and Numerical Mathematics group, they seek new collaborations in research and education, synergizing the combined experience of both groups.

State-of-the art simulations and experiments capture processes and phenomena in multiple high-resolution fields. The richness of the data provides an unprecedented opportunity to gain new insights, but also introduces various challenges for the analysis. Steffen’s talk will focus on visualization approaches from recent work for making sense of large spatio-temporal data as well as ensembles. Three related aspects are discussed in detail: (1) visual mappings for expressive presentation, (2) ML-based approaches and other measures to assess similarities and enable search, as well as (3) systems for large-scale exploration via in situ visualization.

The visual mapping process is also the key aspect for co-visualizing Eulerian hydrodynamic fields together with their Lagrangian tracer particles, due to the challenges of occlusion, visual conflict and visual context. Christian demonstrates the exploration of visualization design spaces for Eulerian and Lagrangian data, and how their representations can be effectively combined. The design approach is evaluated on studies of Lagrangian particle transport by ocean currents. In closure, Christian discusses research on the multiphase flow of hydrocarbon particle plumes around offshore oil- and gas rigs on the Norwegian Continental Shelf, motivated by recently-enacted environmental monitoring policies for the hydrocarbon industry within the EU/EEA.
