WP5

Tools for management response and capacity building

Objectives

With this work package we aim to develop tools for management response and capacity building.

  1. To translate the lessons learnt from WP 1-4 into policy recommendations for Antarctic tourism
  2. To develop options for action in the management of Antarctic tourism

Methodology

WP 5.1. Lessons learnt for policy recommendations

The work performed in this work package will synergize the knowledge generated in WP 1, 2, 3 and 4 and translate it to policy recommendations relevant to the governance of tourism in Antarctica. This includes an analysis of all WPs in respect of their outcomes and relevance to the overall research objective, the encouragement of pro-environmental behaviour of Antarctic tourists and guides engaged in Antarctic tourism. It also comprises an investigation of how the findings of WPs 1-4 can be translated into relevant recommendations for the Dutch government, Antarctic tourism operators, IAATO, PTGA, State authorities’ representatives and policy makers, other ATCPs and the ATCM as such. The results of the analysis and investigation will be discussed during a workshop among all Antarctic tourism actors and researchers that have been part of the project.

WP5.2. Tools for tourism management

Based on the research outcomes of WPs 1 to 4, this work package aims at the development of concrete management tools to prevent and mitigate negative impacts arising from tourism activities and to encourage pro-environmental behaviour of tourists in Antarctica. For this purpose, the research results of all four work packages will be analysed to identify key issues to prevent and mitigate negative tourism impacts, taking into account the specific ecological, scientific, wilderness and aesthetic values of Antarctica. This analysis will include an assessment of existing management practices and make suggestions how the existing approaches could be supplemented by integrating results from the present research. Moreover, the research outcomes will be investigated towards the promotion of pro-environmental behaviour of Antarctic tourists. In this regard special emphasis will be put on the research results of WP2 and examples of good practices of tourist guiding in Antarctica will be compiled. For the latter purpose, a special workshop with the researchers of WP2 and 5 and representatives of PTGA, IAATO and AECO will be conducted (side-event to the WP 5.1. workshop)
