Qualitative Research Design in Population Studies and Health

Program description

Objectives

Upon completion of the course participants:

  • Are familiar with the phases in the ‘Qualitative Research Cycle’ and can apply them to their own research.
  • Can design a qualitative research project: from formulation of research questions to theoretical framework; and from research design to the selection of qualitative research methods.
  • Can apply several qualitative research methods
  • Have a detailed understanding of both theoretical and practical aspects of qualitative research methods.

Focus

Research design, use of theories and conduct of qualitative research methods; examples from international research in population studies and health; most teaching in small, interactive classes.

This ten week course (10 ECTS) trains participants in qualitative research in population studies and health. The course consists of three modules:

1) The Research Process

2) Capita selecta Theories on Population and Health, and

3) Qualitative Research Methods.

The three modules link to and build upon each other. Based on the ‘Qualitative Research Cycle’ (Hutter, Hennink, and Bailey, 2011) the course starts with the formulation of qualitative research questions. Students subsequently embed these questions in theories on population and health. While becoming familiar with the research cycle, participants learn how to design a qualitative research project and receive intensive training in the conduct of qualitative research methods.

The course is an excellent introductory course for participants embarking on a qualitative research career in population studies and health. Lessons learned are evaluated through individual assignments and an exam. Participants obtain a certificate upon completion of the course.

Curriculum

The Research Process module focusses on the formulation of research questions and the application of theories; on the formulation of a conceptual model and definition of concepts; and on research methodology. The Theory module deepens the participants’ understanding of the role of theory in research on population studies and health. The Qualitative Research Methods module focuses on the design and conduct of in-depth interviews, focus groups and participant observation.

Extra information

The short course is based on our expertise in training in the design and application of qualitative research methods, resulting in the book on Qualitative Research Methods by Hutter et al. (2011), published by Sage.

Evaluation includes

Weekly assignments culminating in a qualitative research outline; a portfolio of methods applied, and a final presentation of lessons learned. Students of the short course also take part in specialist seminars, for instance on Population, Health and Place.
