Hanze Study Centre

Faculty of Arts

Welcome to the Hanze Study Centre of the University of Groningen

The Hanze is currently a symbol of inter-regional cooperation, tolerance and economic progress in the North Sea and Baltic Sea region. The study of the historical relations between the North Sea and Baltic regions, and between the Netherlands and the Hanze in particular, has increased greatly in importance against this background. Groningen , the economic gateway to Northern Europe and the only Dutch university city with a Hanze past, is the obvious choice to take a leading role.

The Hanze Study Centre has the following aims:

  • To acquire and disseminate knowledge about the history of the Hanze
  • To function as a documentation and knowledge centre for the historical links between the North Sea and Baltic regions in general, and between the northeast of the Netherlands and the Hanze in particular
  • To make archive data more accessible through the drawing up of inventories and digital publishing projects
  • To function as an international academic meeting point by organizing workshops and symposia
  • To support new research within and outside the existing university frameworks
  • To join international research groups
  • To advise and support various cultural manifestations such as exhibitions, public lectures and courses.

The Hanze Study Centre (founded in spring 2002) uses the concept Hanze as a pars pro toto because in the long term the attention will shift also to post-Hanseatic links between the Netherlands and the countries around the Baltic.
