BA Year 1
In the first year students are given a general introductions to literary studies and linguistics. At the same time, students attend Frisian courses. Students also follow a 'minor' programme of their choice. Popular minors for students of Frisian are journalism, film studies and that of applied linguistics (follow the link to the left of our web page to see some of the different mniors you can choose between)
BA Year 2
In the second year, students follow courses about literary and the sociolinguistic landscapes of minority language regions. The situation of Frisian literature and language is dealt with in a comparative manner and the students gain insights into the general theories and approaches to minority group litratures and languages.
BA Year 3
In their third year students get the chance to deepen their knowledge about Frisian language at the same time as specialising in an area of their choice while writing a BA thesis. Students are also encouraged to go abroad to another minority language area on exchange programmes for a term, or take an internship either with a company in Friesland or a multinational organisation that deals with langauge politics and language planning issues.
MA
A number of different opportunities exist for students with a BA degree in Frisian language and culture. Three MA programmes in particular are especially suitable to our graduates. These are the MA in Frisian language and culture (focussing either on Old Frisian, Sociolinguistics, Linguistics or Literary Studies respectively), the Research master programmes (ReMa) in linguistics and the educational MA that can lead to a teacher qualification. There are other opportunities as well, however, why not consider the Euroculture MA, or an international Research Master in Multilingualism. for instance at the newly founded University Campus Fryslân (starting off in 2012)?
