Premaster Media and Journalism Studies

In the Dutch higher education system a Bachelor degree from a university of professional education (known as HBO) does not allow you to enroll in a Master's program at a research university (such as the RUG). You need to enroll in a Premaster program first.

As of the academic year 2011-2012 the Department of Journalism Studies offers a Premaster program of 60 ECTS for those students who want to apply for the Master of Journalism. The program consists of the complete set of courses in our Minor of Media and Journalism Studies, that we offer all undergraduate students.

Please note: the completion of the Premaster does not guarantee a place in the selective Master of Journalism. All candidates, whatever their educational background, must take part in the yearly selection procedure, for both the Dutch and the international Master.

Content

  • Within the minor we study the functions, actions, content and effects of media in their cultural context. With 'media' we primarily mean informative media for a larger audience (newspapers, magazines, radio, television, documentaries, websites). With 'cultural' we mean culture in the broader, anthropological sense.
  • Within the minor we work from an interdisciplinary perspective. Insights and methods as developed in the academic fields of history, social sciences and cultural sciences are applied coherently.
  • Within the minor we compare between different media, historical periods, countries and mediasystems.

The course code links take you to the course catalogue, where you can find more detailed descriptions.

The course order may seem a bit odd, but that is due to the fact that the regular undergraduate students take these courses throughout the three years of their Bachelor's program, starting in Semester II and the courses are numbered accordingly. It is of no effect to students partaking in the Premaster.
