Criteria for (associate) fellow of SOM, research school of the Faculty of Economics and Business:
To qualify for being a SOM (associate) fellow, a faculty member of FEB has
- to hold a PhD degree,
- do research that fits within SOM, and
- have sufficient SOM credit points (over a four-year period), namely:
- SOM fellow: 5 points, of which at least 4 points from international journal publications
- SOM associate fellow: 3 points, of which at least 2 points from international journal publications.
SOM (associate) fellows are appointed by the SOM Board on the recommendation of the SOM director. The director of a research institute decides on admission of a SOM (associate) fellow to that particular research institute.
In addition, the following rules apply.
- The rules for SOM credit points are:
- International journals in three categories:
- 5 points: top and top field journals (according to the list available at the website)
- 3 points: very good journals (according to the list available at the website)
- 1 point: good journals (according to the list available only at intranet)
- Monographs in two categories:
- 3 points: published by a top publisher (according to the list available at the SOM website)
- 1 point: published by a highly reputed publisher (according to the list available at the SOM website)
- Chapters in books and edited volumes in two categories:
- 1.5 point: published by a top publisher
- 0.5 point: published by a highly reputed publisher
- PhD thesis: 1 point
- PhD thesis supervision: 1 point
- Editorship (editor-in-chief) of an international journal: 1 point
- The SOM Board determines and publishes the lists of journals and publishers for the various categories.
- The list with 5 and 3 point journals has been set fixed for a period of three years (until Spring 2012).
- Submissions to the 1 point journal list can be made during the year by the directors of the research institutes to the scientific director of SOM. As a rule, journals must have an impact factor higher than 0.3. Exceptions to this rule have to be well motivated.
- The list of journals does not include journals in fields outside the scope of SOM. Points for publications in these journals can be granted (also in the 5 or 3 point category) by the scientific director of SOM.
- The formula 2/(n+1), where n is the number of authors/supervisors is applied to correct for the number of authors or supervisors.
- If someone has a part-time appointment the criteria are adjusted as follows:
- 50 – 100% appointment: linear correction, so percentage of appointment x 5 (3) points in 4 years;
- <50% appointment: minimum of 50% of the points, so 2.5 (1.5) points in 4 years.
- Correction for part-time appointment only applies to researchers who do not have another appointment at RuG, another university or a research institution.
- If someone has less time available during a certain period due to specific situations like illness or maternity leave the criteria can be adjusted accordingly
- If a (associate) fellow does not meet the criteria, he/she will be informed that the criteria should be met within two years; otherwise the status of (associate) fellow will be terminated. For example, if a (associate) fellow does not meet the criteria in 2010 (publication period 2006-2009), he/she has to meet the criteria in the spring of 2012 (publication period 2008-2011).
In 2011, the new criteria will be applied (over the period 2007-2010). Until 2011, points will be calculated based on both the old and new criteria. In the years 2008, 2009, and 2010 researchers qualify if they meet either the old criteria or the new criteria, so not a combination of both.
In special circumstances the SOM board can - on the recommendation of the SOM director - appoint a faculty member as SOM (associate) fellow although he or she does not meet the criteria. This appointment is possible only once and for a maximum of three years. Within this period the faculty member is required to meet the criteria.
(Vice-)Deans can be granted exemption by the SOM board from the rules during the period of their administrative function and three consecutive years.
