This talk traces the occupation of theologians with art and material culture back to 19th century Protestant Germany. It explores very early incidents in the history of 'material religion' when the Protestant theologian Ferdinand Piper installed the now forgotten research discipline ‘Monumental Theology’ at the theology faculty of Berlin in 1845 and published the "Einleitung in die Monumentale Theologie" in 1867. The paper further argues that it was Friedrich Schleiermacher whose concept of ‘Anschauung’ set this process in motion.
