Jan de Vries has been appointed as professor in Operations Management, in particular the interrelationship between planning and control systems and their organisational embedding, at the Faculty of Economics and Business. De Vries was already associate professor on the same chair and has been promoted to professor as of 1 July.

Albert Boonstra has been appointed as professor in Information Management, more specifically in the interrelations between IT, organizations and people, at the Faculty of Economics and Business. Boonstra was already associate professor on the same chair since 2008 and has been promoted to professor as of 1 July.

Bribery is key for entrepreneurs who operate in a business environment with insufficient formal institutions, and that is dominated by a dual market structure and powerful government officials. ‘We suggest, however, that bribes are subject to diminishing returns because high levels of bribes increasingly absorb the returns on entrepreneurial activities, and distort entrepreneurial spirit and behavior’, says dr. Gjalt de Jong. He is first author of the paper Which entrepreneurs bribe and what do they get from it? Exploratory evidence from Vietnam, which is the next FEB Publication of the Month.

Accountancy alumnus Henk-Jan Nanninga of the Faculty of Economics and Business has been awarded the Master Thesis Award Accountancy 2010, with prize money of 3,000 euro. He graduated cum laude with his thesis on the influence of measurement of financial instruments at banks and its effect on economic trends. Last week Ernst & Young awarded the annual Master Thesis Awards for the fifth time.
