Happy Halloween from Hylke and Aletta Jacobs!

Although it’s exam season, you deserve to take a break and do something fun. And what better way to do that than by celebrating Halloween? In today’s blog, we give you some inspiration for last-minute Halloween costumes - university-related of course - so you don’t have to worry about that ;).

#1 Aletta Jacobs

Of course, Aletta Jacobs cannot be missed. She was the first woman in the Netherlands to register to a university–our university–as a regular student, and she also was a women’s suffrage activist. An inspiring woman to dress up as! There are Aletta Jacobs costumes out there, but if you want you can also put something together yourself. Go to the thrift shop and see if you can find a long, dark skirt, a high-neck blouse and maybe even a corset to put underneath. You can even get a grey wig if you want to go all out. With this costume you don’t go back to the future, but back to the past!

#2 Be your favourite professor

Is there a professor that you think is remarkable and fantastic? Dress up like them this Halloween! You’ll probably have something in your wardrobe that you can use for this costume, so it’s perfect for last-minute decisions. Depending on how friendly you are with your professor, you could send them a photo of you. I’m sure they would love to see it! ;)

#3 Peer-review

Because you can’t do a peer review without a peer, you need a friend for this costume. One of you will be the essay you’ve written and the other will be the red marker with which you assess it. It’s not as hard as it might sound. Just print out one of your essays and pin all the pieces of paper on your clothes. The other dresses in red from head to toe and puts on a red birthday hat or a cone made from red paper. Et voilà, you are THE peer review duo. This will probably be the only time peer-reviewing is fun.

#4 Student card

You can also dress up as a UG student card. Just take a piece of cardboard and print or paint a student card on it. Cut out the head in the passport photo and when the time’s there to go to the party, put your head through the hole. Better not put your actual name and student number on there, for privacy reasons, you know.

#5 Reserved spot at the library

Reserving a spot at the University Library can be a hassle, and don’t even get me started on the people who steal your reserved spot. So, to honour this experience, you can just drag a foldable chair with you all night and sit on it in random spots. Chances are high that people will steal your chair just like they do in the library, which will only make your costume even more realistic.

There you go, 5 easy and funny Halloween costumes you can assemble last minute. Which one is your favourite? And what are you dressing up as this Halloween? Let us know in the comments below. Happy spooky season!

Hylke

Hiya! I’m Hylke, a Dutch MA English Literature student. People often ask me if I’m Frisian, but sadly I’m not; I just have a Frisian name. I love reading, writing, meeting with friends, and the colour yellow, so much so that I take pictures of every yellow wall I can find!
