South African philosopher Johan Degenaar died
“Johan Degenaar was an iconic figure who helped shaped thinking – not only at Stellenbosch University (SU) where he taught for many years and did his research, but also further afield.” This was how Maties Rector and Vice-Chancellor Prof Wim de Villiers of Stellenbosch University responded to news of the passing of Prof Degenaar yesterday (Wednesday 22 Juli 2015). Degenaar, who was 89, was one of South Africa’s most influential philosophers. Having obtained master’s and doctoral degrees from SU, and having also studied at the universities of Groningen (1949-1950), Leiden, Oxford, Berlin and Heidelberg, Degenaar lectured at SU for 42 years until his retirement in 1991.
