Prof. Gerrit Voerman (1957) is Professor of Development and functioning of the Dutch and European party system. He is an expert on (the history of) Dutch political parties and is regularly asked to comment on elections and developments within parties.

Voerman has headed the Documentation Centre for Dutch Political Parties (DNPP) of the University of Groningen since 1989. He studied History at this university from 1977 to 1985. In 2001 he gained his PhD with a thesis entitled De meridiaan van Moskou. De CPN en de Communistische Internationale (1919-1930) [The Moscow meridian. The CPN and the Communist Internationale (1919-1930)]. He publishes extensively on political parties, including Verloren illusie, geslaagde fusie? GroenLinks in historisch en politicologisch perspectief, [Lost illusions, successful merger? GroenLinks in historical and politicological perspective] 1999; with P. Lucardie and W.H. van Schuur; Om de stembus. Verkiezingsaffiches 1918-1998 [Around the voting box. Election adverts 1918-1998] (2002; D.J. Elzinga); and Handelsreiziger in revoluties. Fré Meis (1921-1992) [Salesman in times of revolution. Fré Meis (1921-1992)] (2002; with L. Siepe).

He is currently researching party culture in an international perspective and the relationship between Dutch parties and the European parties of which they form part. In addition, he is working on a volume on the political party PvdA and a monograph about Dutch populists.
