The Study Centre for Children, Migration and Law in VARA documentary
The second episode of the documentary series ‘Expelled’ from the VARA, on Wednesday July 3, features the Study Centre for Children, Migration and Law. The Study Centre is part of the Special Education Department of the Faculty of BSS and it conducts behavioural and legal research on issues relating to asylum and refugee children.
The VARA documentary series ‘Expelled’ is about the plight of asylum children who have been deported. Over the past decade, hundreds of children have been deported to countries that they do not or barely remember. Their parents had asked for political asylum in the Netherlands, but did not succeed in getting it. They were subsequently given the choice to leave voluntarily in exchange for money, or they would be expelled by force by the Dutch government. The politically responsible authorities assured that these children would be fine in the country of their parents. But how they actually fared after their expulsion is virtually unknown.
The documentary series ‘Expelled’ examines how it is possible that – in the urge to expel as many asylum seekers as possible – the importance of the children seems to have been forgotten. The VARA uses the documentary series to show what the consequences of the contemporary Dutch deportation policy are for these ‘Dutch’ children. The series will start on Wednesday, June 26 with an episode about war children.
‘Expelled,’ is a four-part documentary series about the fate of expelled asylum children. The various episodes will be broadcasted on Wednesday June 26, and July 3, 10 and 17, at 21.15 hours at the VARA on Nederland 2.
