Microglia continuously monitor their surroundings for possible damage or infection of the brain. According to the state of the tissue, i.e., healthy, diseased or damaged, microglia exist in various phenotypes. An experimental model for multiple sclerosis was used to assess the phenotypes of microglia involved in physiological plasticity and regeneration of brain tissue. Furthermore, a protocol was developed to isolate human microglia from human brain for further investigation.
