On the occasion of the 400-year anniversary of the University of Groningen, in 2014, these short films (in Dutch and English) and audio-interviews (in Dutch) were made on the important contribution to science of these scholars and scientists in Groningen.

Ubbo Emmius

Ubbo Emmius (1547-1625) , first Rector Magnificus of the University in Groningen and professor of Greek and History, made an important contribution to the foundation of the university in Groningen. Dr. Zweder von Martels talks about him.

Jean Barbeyrac

Jean Barbeyrac (1674-1744) , professor in public and private law, contributed much to the translation, organization of comment on 17th and 18th century texts on natural law. Professor emeritus Arjo Vanderjagt talks about his important work.

Petrus Camper

Petrus Camper (1722-1789) , medical scientist in the age of enlightenment, made a significant contribution to the improvement of medical care in the Netherlands. Professor Mart van Lieburg and professor Bart Ramakers talk about this versatile scientist.

Petrus Driessen

Petrus Driessen (1753-1828) , professor of chemistry, who intitiated chemistry in the Netherlands. Professor Klaas van Berkel en drs. Ulco Kooystra talk about his ground-breaking work.

Jacobus Kapteyn

Jacobus Cornelius Kapteyn (1851-1922) , professor of astronomy, who did ground-breaking research on the Milky Way. Honarary professor Piet van der Kruit talks about the father of Dutch astronomy.

Aletta Jacobs

Aletta Jacobs (1854-1929) , the famous exponent of the first feminist wave in the Netherlands, first female student, first woman to obtain a doctoral degree and first female physician in the Netherlands. Professor Mineke Bosch tells her story.

Gerard Heymans

Gerard Heymans (1857-1930) , professor of philosophy and psychology, founder of psychology in the Netherlands. Professor Douwe Draaisma talks about Heymans important contribution to psychology in the Netherlands.

Herman Jan Scheltema

Herman Jan Scheltema (1906-1981) , professor of Roman Law. Professor emeritus Jan Lokin talks about Scheltema's contribution .

Leendert Daniël Eerland

Leendert Daniël Eerland (1937-1965) , professor of Surgery, who specialized in thoracic surgery and promoted the wide-reaching integration of diagnosis and therapy. Drs. Rolf ter Sluis, curator of the medical collections of the University Museum Groningen, talks about the great contributions Eerland has made to surgery in Groningen.
