Publication KNIR Papers Vol. 75 by Dr Dario Monti

It is with great pleasure that we announce the publication of Papers of the Royal Netherlands Institute in Rome vol. 75 of our KNIR Fellow, Dr Dario Monti. The book, Inner Sabina before Rome: Landscape, Settlement, and Society in the Central Apennines (Quasar), is based on Dario’s PhD dissertation, which he defended in 2024 at the Université catholique de Louvain. His doctoral research, centred on the inland region of Sabina in the central Apennines, explored how ancient mountain communities organised their settlement systems, economies, and social structures in relation to both environmental constraints and cultural choices. Moving beyond traditional narratives that frame upland regions as marginal or underdeveloped, it approached these communities as dynamic and adaptive, shaped through ongoing socio-ecological interactions and historically specific trajectories. For those of you who are interested in Dario's work and would like to have something interesting to read during the summer, Dario's KNIR Papers vol. 75: Inner Sabina before Rome: Landscape, Settlement, and Society in the Central Apennines can be ordered from Edizioni Quasar or any regular bookstore and is also available in open access.
