Borrowing books

Library card and proxy

  • Staff members
You can activate your UMCG-pass to work as a library card.
    1. log in to our catalogue SmartCat (top right via Sign in)
    2. let us know your barcode (that's the number on the backside of your UMCG card) via e-mail:, telephone (050) 361 6200, chat Chat with the CMB or come to the library of course.

As soon as your UMCG card is activated, you can request and borrow books from all University of Groningen libraries. And if we do not have an article or book in our collection, you can easily request it from other libraries. This is always free of charge for staff members, regardles whether the publication comes from a Dutch or a foreign library.

  • Students can borrow books by using their student cards. It is not necessary to activate student cards.

How and where do I find books?
You can search for books in the catalogue. You will find books on the third floor of the CMB. More and more books, especially the most recent ones, are availble electronically (see this
overview of e-books ).

Renewing is no longer needed
As long as no other borrower needs a book, its loan will be automatically renewed: for staff up to a maximum of 24 times 4 weeks, for students and others to a maximum of 12 times 4 weeks. When another borrower reserves a book, it will have to be returned by the end of the loan period. In such case, you'll receive a notification by e-mail.

Mandatory textbooks for students
At the circulation desk you can borrow mandatory textbooks one at a time (for use in the library only) by handing in your student card.
