Date:November 09, 2011

PhD ceremony: Mr. A.L.J. Olsson, 14.30 uur, Aula Academiegebouw, Broerstraat 5, Groningen

Dissertation: Acoustic sensing of the bacterium-substratum interface

Promotor(s): prof. H.J. Busscher, prof. H.C. van der Mei

Faculty: Medical Sciences

This thesis investigates the potential use of an acoustic sensing technique called Quartz Crystal Microbalance (QCM) for non-invasive and non-destructive study of microorganisms’ adhesive bond to surfaces.   We have shown that QCM indeed can be used to study bacterial adhesion, or more specifically, that the QCM can be used to study the stiffness of the adhesive bond.
