October 29 - 31 - Groningen - The Netherlands

The workshop builds on the strong relation between the Netherlands and Japan in chemical sciences, which originates from the contributions and devotion of Dr. Koenraad Wolter Gratama (1831-1888), who founded a chemistry school in Osaka in the period 1866-1871. This school for the first time introduced modern chemistry in Japan. Gratama’s important contribution is acknowledged mutually and since 2000 workshops have been organized every three to four years (Osaka, Utrecht, Hyogo, Delft, Tokyo) and now is held from October 29 – 31, 2017 in Groningen, The Netherlands.

The purpose of the workshop is to sustain the excellent relationship between Japan and the Netherlands, and to reinforce the scientific interactions and collaborations. The focus of the upcoming workshop is on current developments in the chemical sciences and adjoining technological fields. The workshop aims to provide an attractive forum for researchers during which top scientists discuss the emerging trends in chemical sciences, also addressing today’s necessity to integrate cross-disciplinary approaches.

The workshop program concentrates on 5 areas, each with oral presentations from both Japanese and Dutch scientists. The tentative program with confirmed speakers is available online. Key topics of the 6th Gratama workshop are: Chemical Biology, Supramolecular Chemistry, (Bio)Catalysis, Synthetic Biology & Nanobiotechnology, and Bio(organic) Chemistry and New Synthetic Methods.

The 6th Gratama workshop is organized by the University of Groningen under auspices of Prof.dr. B. Poolman (Groningen Biomolecular Sciences and Biotechnology Institute), Prof.dr. B.L. Feringa (Stratingh Institute for Chemistry), Prof.dr. Koichi Fukase (Osaka University), who are supported by a scientific and a local organization committee.
