Language courses and tests

Whether you want to improve your English language skills, learn Dutch, or wish to study any foreign language independently, the University of Groningen Language Centre offers various opportunities at several levels.

English

All international students participating in courses or degree programmes taught in English are required to have a good command English. Proficiency in English is one of the admission criteria for all degree programmes. Students whose knowledge of English proves to be inadequate despite passing the admission test may be required to take an English language course. Students who feel insecure about their command of English may also attend these courses. The courses are offered at different levels by the University of Groningen Language Centre.

Language Centre English Test: Students, prospective students and researchers who need proof of their English language level can be tested at the Language Centre. We offer a thorough test, covering all four language skills: speaking, writing, listening and reading. Results are reported in terms of the internationally recognized Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). For further information on the costs and times of the tests, as well as the test registration procedure, please see the Language Centre website. Before applying to take the Language Centre English Test, you should always check with the university or organization concerned whether they will accept our test as proof of your level of English.

Dutch and other languages

The Language Centre also offers courses at various levels in French, Italian, Japanese, Chinese, German, Spanish and Portuguese as well as Dutch for non-native speakers. Intensive, semi-intensive and regular Dutch language courses at different levels are offered several times a year.
