Teaching style

In Dutch higher education, great value is attached to independence, individual opinions and teamwork. Knowledge is considered quantifiable and thus measurable. Study programmes are carefully defined and highly structured. Students are expected to make an active contribution and to work independently. The main role of the teaching staff is to assemble and structure the truths and facts that make up the body of knowledge. Students themselves must make sure that they absorb knowledge and actively filter it, thereby making it their own.

Honours College

A special Honours College has been set up at the University of Groningen in order to give talented, motivated students the chance to be challenged even more by following 'Honours programmes' and taking part in numerous other activities. The main aim of the Honours programmes at the University of Groningen is to develop talent and initiative.

The College will teach students:

  • to master their discipline and exercise it at a higher level
  • to develop a wide view and look beyond the boundaries of their discipline
  • to play a prominent role within and outside their own discipline and make a significant contribution to society.
