Language and communication are fundamental to human activity. Language and Communication Technologies (LCT) is opening the doors to deep scientific understanding of human language and communication, plays a role in the development of web-based technologies, and will play a key role in the development and maintenance of multilingual infrastructures.

Accreditation

The European Master's degree programme in LCT is based on MA/ MSc programmes running locally at the partner universities. They have all received national accreditation. The respective programme at the University of Groningen is the Research Master's degree programme in Linguistics as accredited by the Dutch Government (CROHO 60173).

General information

The Erasmus Mundus European Master’s programme in Language and Communication Technologies (LCT) is designed to meet the demands of industry and research in a rapidly growing area by offering courses in language technology, computational and theoretical linguistics, and computer science. The two-year programme is offered by Saarland University (coordinator), Free University of Bozen-Bolzano, University of Malta, University of Nancy 2, Charles University Prague, and the University of Groningen. The programme offers education and training opportunities for the next generation of leaders in research and innovation. It provides students with profound and practice-oriented knowledge and understanding of the various disciplines that contribute to the methods of language and communication technologies and it strengthens their ability to work according to scientific methods.

Career prospects

The successful completion of the LCT programme provides students with a wide range of knowledge which makes them eligible for PhD positions as the first step to an academic career, but also makes it possible for them to follow a career in the IT industry. We envisage our graduates working in fields such as multilingual information management, development of new technologies for adaptive multimodal and multilingual human-computer dialogue systems, efficient processes for content management on the internet, and development of language strategy and quality assurance.

Admission

The programme is highly selective. To be admitted to the Master’s programme LCT, students must have an internationally recognized Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in the area of Linguistics or Computational Linguistics, Language Technology, Cognitive Sciences, Computer Science, Mathematics, Artificial Intelligence, or other relevant disciplines. Students need to be fluent in English (TOEFL 79/213/550).
